August 2021 Advocacy Bulletin - Afghanistan and Iran

The rural Khorasan dialect of Persian that I learned in Peace Corps Iran became a valuable asset as my career path evolved to include over eleven and a half years of working in Afghanista n for CARE, Save the Children and this year – remotely – for BRAC.  The resilience of Afghans as they endured the promise and peril of successive regimes never ceases to amaze me.  When the staff of CARE Afghanistan conducted a long-range strategic planning process in 2002 they refused to even contemplate the theoretical possibility that the country could ever again fall into the dark days of Taliban rule, or the civil war that preceded it or the Marxist and Soviet decade that precede that.  It was unthinkable.  But tragically, here we are. -- Paul Barker
