It has been a very cold winter in Iran. The situation has been complicated by gas shortages, leaving many homes in the cold for long periods. Regime supporters might have expected fuel shortages in Europe, which have accompanied European sanctions on Russian oil and gas, would force European concessions to Iran in order to gain access to increased Iranian energy exports. In the end Europe has not budged but shortages of Iran’s domestic gas supply added more ‘fuel’ to anti-regime protests.
