Iran, US, and the Gulf region: Is Regional Dialogue
and Diplomacy the Solution?
Webinar Presented by Massachusetts Peace Action (MAPA), Tom Huf
This Webinar will focus on the current dialogue and direct diplomacy among Iran and its
neighbors.
The greatly diminished engagement of the US in the Persian Gulf region, decreasing levels of trust in US commitments, and policy inconsistency since Trump’s disengagement from the JCPOA, have created a vacuum to be filled by the initiatives of others. The ‘maximum pressure’ and militaristic policies initiated by Trump and continued by Biden have failed to yield positive results. At the same time trade and security initiatives by states in the region hint at the possibility of a more promising security framework. Whether or not direct engagement can replace years of hostility on many issues is the main question the panel will address.
