PCIA STATEMENT ON DIPLOMACY WITH IRAN

The PCIA Board of Directors has issued a statement directed to all political parties requesting that the party platform endorse continued diplomacy with Iran.  The cornerstone of this approach is implementation of the 2015 “Joint Plan of Action,” or “Nuclear Agreement.”  Although this statement (attached) focuses on the 2016 party platforms, it pertains to future administration policy in general.  The Board is making this statement available to PCIA members in the hope that you will assist in spreading the message of peace-building through diplomacy.

PEACE CORPS IRAN ASSOCIATION

STATEMENT FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

ON DIPLOMACY WITH IRAN

.

In the interest of improving relations with Iran through diplomacy, the Peace Corps Iran Association (PCIA) Board of Directors is pleased to offer this statement regarding future direction of our government’s policy.

.

Leadership by the United States in implementing the 2015 Joint Plan of Action with Iran is essential to creating conditions for stability and peace in the Middle East.  Military means have failed to resolve conflicts in the region: The promise of diplomacy is clear. The Agreement provides internationally-supported steps to enhance security through oversight, and opens up opportunities for cooperation between Iran and other nations.  The administration will give full support to this groundbreaking Agreement.

.

Background: The 2015 Joint Plan of Action or “Agreement” addressing Iran’s nuclear program and economic sanctions imposed on Iran is a victory for multilateral diplomacy.  It has been hailed as one of the most important and challenging diplomatic accomplishments of the post-World War II period and opens opportunities to heal the distrust and enmity between the U.S. and Iran. Diplomacy is essential to peace.  We, as returned Peace Corps volunteers, can testify to the value of building understanding across national boundaries.

.

Approximately 1,700 Peace Corps volunteers had served in Iran when the program ended 40 years ago this year.  Peace Corps Iran Association is nonprofit, nonpartisan organization established by volunteers with membership open to all who share the PCIA mission: To promote peace and understanding between Americans and Iranians; foster appreciation of Iran in the U.S. through education, outreach, and advocacy; and preserve and share the Iran Peace Corps legacy.

.

Thank you for the opportunity to offer this statement for inclusion in the party platform in 2016.

.

Sincerely,

.

Carolyn Yale
