Peace Corps in Iran: Volunteers

1700 Volunteers

About 1,700 Peace Corps volunteers served in Iran between 1962 and 1976. An Iran Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (RPCV) group existed for several years in the 1980s, but there had been no formal group since then.

In 2011, several Iran RPCVs organized a reunion in Portland, Oregon held in conjunction with Peace Corps’ 50th anniversary. In spite of the fact that there was no contact list of Iran RPCVs and no available funding, about 300 attendees came together for an emotional and memorable weekend.

As a follow-up to the 2011 reunion, the Peace Corps Iran Association was organized as a 501 (c) 3  nonprofit corporation in 2012.
